The Job: An American Novel was one of two novels printed by Sinclair Lewis in 1917. The other was The Innocents which many consider to be another “pot boiler” of a novel. “Pot boiler” is the modern equivalent of “pulp fiction” or “mass market fiction.” The Job is a serious novel.

“The Job” takes place over a decade from 1905-1915. In this novel the hero is actually a heroine: Miss Una Golden. In 1905 she is 24 yrs. old and lives in the town of Panama, Pennsylvania.

1. The Egyptian by M. Waltari

Ancient Egypt has been a favorite destination of many tales and also some serious historical research. Mika Waltari put a great deal of effort in producing a novel which bears no errors in depicting the life of Egyptian people at that time – even scientific historians acknowledge he did a good job.

The main character, royal physician Sinuhe, tells a story of the rise, rule and fall of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, a member of the 18th Dynasty. The story is being told retrospectively in exile and is based on an Egyptian “Fairy Tale” called The Story of Sinuhe.

I have a long commute to and from work every day so when I decided that I would like to join a book club, I really wanted to find one that was close to my home. After looking for a while I decided instead to start up a group of my own. It turned out to be quite easy to do and our small group has now been meeting regularly for almost three years.

Many book club members complain that they spend all their time reading the club choices and rarely get to read the books they would select if left to their own devices. There is some truth in this but the benefit, of course, is that the club challenges you to read outside your comfort zone and that can be extremely rewarding.
